The invention concerns a method applicable to a process such as infiltration or chemical vapour deposition or cementation used in a furnace comprising setting operating parameters of the furnace, introducing in the furnace a reactive gas containing at least a gaseous hydrocarbon, and extracting from the furnace a flue gas containing by-products of the reactive gas reaction. The flue gas is washed with an oil absorbing tars contained in the flue gas, and an information concerning the course of the process is obtained from measuring the amount of tars absorbed by the oil.
