The invention concerns a method comprising the following steps: selecting several fixed points in space, located at different azimuths along the circumference in at least one sidewall of the tyre, performing as many measurements of circumferential distance variation (extension or contraction) at those fixed points when the tyre is running on the road surface, processing the measurement signals so as to extract therefrom the three components of a resultant of the loads exerted by the road surface on the contact zone of a tyre and the self-alignment torque generated by the tyre, processing the signals evaluating the three components of a resultant of the loads exerted by the road surface on the contact zone of a tyre and the self-alignment torque generated by the tyre so as to extract therefrom said friction coefficient ν.
