The invention concerns a method for collecting an object (P), such as mail or a postal package, comprising an address (Ad) for subsequent forwarding to said address. It consists in introducing said object (P) in a collecting chamber (2) through an insertion opening (2b) provided in a wall of the collecting chamber. Inside the collecting chamber (2), and at the output of the inserting opening (2b), in hermetically and automatically packaging said object (P), when it is introduced in the chamber (2) such that the address (Ad) remains visible. Preferably, when the object (P) is being packaged, it is urged into contact exclusively with the inner surface (30a, 31a) of the package.
