PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method by which high reliability on works can be attained and large work processing ability can be assured in classification of shipping articles. ;SOLUTION: In the apparatus for processing the shipping articles 12 provided with shipping addresses by using devices 14, 20, 40, 44 for transporting the shipping articles 12 along a transport path, a device 18 for automatically reading the shipping addresses and a device 100 disposed in the transport path for automatically assessing the read shipping addresses, an intermediate storage section 30 having a number of cells Z is disposed at a downstream side of the reading device 18 in the transport path. A device 102, which can introduce the shipping articles into the cell Z from the transport path each time, can selectively return the shipping articles to the transport path from the cells in response to a first removal signal each time and detects an association between each cell Z and the shipping articles 12 deposited therein, is provided.
