The procedure for treating a fluid circulating through a pipe involves creating a volume of fluid to be treated, generating an electromagnetic field close to the pipe, guiding it towards the moving fluid, and introducing and distributing the field homogeneously in a section of the fluid contained within the selected volume. The procedure for treating a fluid (2) circulating through a pipe (3) by the application of energy from an intense electromagnetic field (4) produced by an electromagnetic wave (5) from a generator, such as a magnetron (6), involves creating a volume (9) of fluid to be treated, generating the electromagnetic field close to the pipe, guiding it towards the moving fluid, and introducing and distributing the field homogeneously in a section of the fluid contained within the selected volume. The height of the selected volume (9) is an even multiple, and preferably a quarter or a half, of the electromagnetic wavelength. The height of the selected volume is preferably 5 - 15 mm, and the frequency of the electromagnetic wavelength is preferably 900 MHz - 2.45 GHz. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for use in the above method.
