The process, using an electrolyte containing ions of a material such as an actinide or lanthanide to be applied by electrochemical deposition on a flat, disc or annular metal or metal-covered support, uses an organic electrolyte based on dimethylformamide. The deposited material, which is a source (29) of alpha and X-rays for use in PIXE (particle-induced X-ray emission) and XRF (photon-excited X-ray fluorescence) analysis, can be of Curium-244, and has an activity of between 5 and 50 MBq. The metal or metal covering of the support can be of gold, silver or platinum, and the radiation source has a permeable window (28) of polymer, diamond or diamond-like carbon.
