Front and side emitting LEDs (112) are arranged alternately on a PCB (114). Each front emitting LED has a main emission direction aligned to the front direction, while each side emitting LED has a main emission direction aligned to the lateral direction. Optical sheets (110) diffuse and condense the light from the LEDs to a liquid crystal panel (115). Preferably, the alternating LEDs are grouped in clusters. An independent claim is also included for an LCD.
