The device has a thermo-resistive sensor (3), placed in an oil pan (2) of a heat engine (1) of a motor vehicle, providing a voltage signal indicating the oil level in the pan. The signal is processed by an electronic device (4) placed in the dashboard of the vehicle and connected to a monitoring system (5). The sensor and the device (4) are placed internal to the engine, and are identical to the sensor and the electronic device equipping the engine during its marketing.
