The shell mattress has two main parts - one part (1) to support the patient and another (2) for monitoring/treatment equipment and a drip-feed support (3). Each part contains micro-balls that make it rigid when a vacuum is applied, and the upper part (2) has rigid arches to take the weight of equipment and create a space above the patient's legs, and a hole for the drip-feed support. In addition, its upper surface can have a ridge with a rubber strap for applying pressure to a drip-feed pouch when there is insufficient height available for a support. The lower part (1) has pulleys (6, 7) for traction systems and sleeves (8, 9) for gas cylinders.
