The method involves transmitting a fan-shaped neutron beam (16) that is produced by a fast neutron source (12) and a fan-shaped X-ray beam (26) that is produced by a continuous spectral X-ray source (22) through an inspected object. An intensity of the transmitted X-rays and neutrons is directly measured by an X-ray detector array (28) and a neutron detector array (18) respectively. Materials of the inspected object are identified by Z-dependency curves formed by attenuation differences between the neutron beam and the X-ray beam transmitted through different materials of the inspected object. An independent claim is also included for an equipment for performing a method for discriminating materials by employing fast neutron and continuous spectral X-ray according comprising a fast neutron source for producing neutrons.
