Hydrotreatment/hydroconversion of heavy hydrocarbon charge in a fixed bed comprises reacting the fixed bed with a hydrogenated gas containing liquid hydrocarbon at 200-5000 cm 3 in the presence of a catalyst under reaction conditions of 320-450[deg]C, a partial pressure of 3-30 MPa, and a volumetric spatial velocity of 0.05-5 volumes of the charge per volume of catalyst per hour in which the catalyst having a support containing alumina, catalytic metal or a metal compound of the group VIB and/or VIII of the periodic table classification of the elements. Hydrotreatment/hydroconversion comprises reacting the bed with a hydrogenated gas containing liquid hydrocarbon at 200-5000 cm 3 in the presence of a catalyst under reaction conditions of 320-450[deg]C, a partial pressure of 3-30 MPa, and a volumetric spatial velocity of 0.05-5 volumes of the charge per volume of a catalyst per hour in which the catalyst having a support containing alumina, catalytic metal or a metal compound of the group VIB and/or VIII of the periodic table classification of the elements, and having porous juxtaposed and agglomerated acicular plates, where the plates of each agglomerate is directed radially w.r.t the other plates and the support is present in an irregular non-spherical form or mainly in fragments form obtained by crushing of alumina balls. The support is prepared by: granulating an active alumina powder having a poorly crystallized and/or amorphous structure to obtain agglomerates in the form of balls; maturing the balls at 60-100[deg]C under humid condition and drying the balls; sifting the dried balls to recover a fraction of the balls; crushing the obtained fraction; calcinating the crushed fraction 250-900[deg]C; subjecting acid impregnation and hydrothermal treatment of the calcined fraction at 80-250[deg]C; and drying the treated fraction at 500-1100[deg]C.
