The method involves continuously displacing a part along a measuring path by a robot with instantaneous speed and instantaneous acceleration which does not indicate the length of the path. A quantity is measured based on the diameter of a circular trace during the displacement of the part along the measuring path, without contacting the part. The diameter of the part is determined from the quantity measured at several measuring points along the path. The robot is formed of a fixed base and a manipulator arm having weight greater than 20 kilograms. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for measuring diameter of a circular trace of a part (2) an assembling chain of a part having a circular trace.
