The device has a carrier member (10) having a cylindrical central passage adapted to receive a rotor shaft provided with a commutator. Each brush is secured onto flexible brush holders (18) that urge the brushes towards the cylindrical central passage and into a position of contact with the commutator. The carrier member includes mechanical elements (11) for retaining the flexible brush holders in an assembly position outside of the cylindrical central passage. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting a rotor shaft in a casing of an electric motor.
