The method involves varying an opening/closing diagram of a valve of an internal combustion engine operating according to a four phased cycle for obtaining a negative torque value and engine speed drop in a given time. The cycle has rises (22, 24) of an intake valve of a cylinder of the engine, where the rise (22) is for opening an intake valve during an intake phase. The rise (24) is to open the valve, when a piston of the engine is at the neighborhood of a top dead centre of a combustion phase. The rise (24) starts and ends before and after the piston reaches the dead center respectively.
