The method involves cutting independent flat elementary roundels of identical geometry from a support, where each roundel (21) is provided with triangular perforations (D, E). The roundels are divided along a line passing through the center of the roundel to obtain complementary junction lines (24, 25). An identical axial space is formed on the roundels and between each pair of junction lines corresponding to a step of a helical spring. The different complementary elementary roundels are assembled by laser welding the roundels along respective junction lines. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a helical spring comprising flat elementary roundels (2) a motor vehicle steering assembly comprising a steering column.
