A pipetting device includes first 110 and second 112 bodies, through which a plurality of pipettes extend. The surface of one of the bodies is free to move relative to the surface of the other body. Relative motion between the two bodies causes an inter-pipette distance exhibited by the pipetting device to vary. One embodiment employs slots 302-308 and 300 arranged in the respective bodies which cooperate to guide the pipettes 102b-108b to converge or diverge. In a second embodiment the pipettes 602-608 are fixed to rotating posts. The pipettes are caused to rotate about the posts in guide slots 700 and 702 in the first 610 and second bodies thereby causing the pipettes to move relative to one another.
