PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert an image from an input device to a color closer to the color available at an output device, when converting the image to an image corresponding to the color gamut of the output device, by reducing the color gamut of a color signal outside the color gamut of the output device. PSOLUTION: If the color gamut of an input device is different from that of an output device, a color signal outside the output device color gamut is reduced in color gamut in the direction of minimizing a value of color difference formula represented by formula 1, where ΔLSP*/SPis a difference in lightness, ΔCSP*/SPis a difference in chroma and ΔHSP*/SPis a difference in hue; and parameters K are predetermined constants or functions of a lightness LSP*/SP, chroma CSP*/SPand hue hSP*/SP, respectively.
