PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-sensitivity methanol-responsive promoter inducing expression of a gene on the downstream side with the methanol at a low concentration. PSOLUTION: The methanol-responsive promoter comprises the following regions (1) and (2) in the direction from 5' to 3' in the order : (1) a methanol-responsive region selected from the group consisting of the following (a), (b) and (c): (a) a polynucleotide composed of a base sequence of a specific sequence, (b) a polynucleotide composed of a base sequence in which one or a plurality of bases are deleted, substituted or added in the base sequence (a) and having the methanol responsiveness and (c) a polynucleotide hybridizing to a polynucleotide composed of a sequence complementary to all of the base sequence (a) or a part thereof under stringent conditions and having the methanol responsiveness and (2) a core promoter region which is a minimum region necessary for initiating transcription and contains a binding site of an RNA polymerase.
