PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide Mg-containing oxide film-coated iron powder having low coercive force, and to provide a composite soft magnetic material produced using the powder and having low coercive force and low core loss.;SOLUTION: The Mg-containing oxide film-coated iron powder having low coercive force is obtained by coating the surface of raw material powder composed of polycrystal iron powder having crystal grains in which, provided that the cross-sectional area of iron powder is defined as S and the cross-sectional area of the maximum crystal grains among the crystal grains observed in the cross-section of the iron powder is defined as Amax, the Amax lies in the range of 0.5S to S with an Mg-containing oxide film having a componential composition satisfying Mg1-XFeXO (wherein 0≤X1) and a thickness of 10 to 500 nm.
