PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance catalyst effectively removing minute amount of carbon monoxide in air or gaseous hydrogen. PSOLUTION: Minute amount of carbon monoxide can be effectively removed by using an inorganic composite material as a catalyst, which is obtained by supporting ultrafine particles of gold on an apatite carrier, where the apatite comprises calcium and phosphorus prepared so that a value of Ca/P expressing the molar ratio of calcium and phosphorus becomes less than 5/3 which is the theoretical value derived from the chemical formula CaSB10/SB(POSB4/SB)SB6/SB(OH)SB2/SBof apatite.
