UNFERMENTED GEL FRACTION DERIVED FROM PSYLLIUM SEED HUSK

PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly polymerized gel-forming fraction derived from psyllium seed husk and useful for the treatment and prevention of constipation and as a hypocholesterolemic agent. PSOLUTION: The method for fractionating psyllium seed husk for obtaining a gel fraction and additional carbohydrate fraction comprises (a) the mixing of the husk in an aqueous alkali solution containing hydroxide ion in an amount of 0.15-1.0M and the fractionation of the husk into an alkali-soluble fraction and an alkali-insoluble fraction, (b) the removal of the alkali-insoluble fraction, (c) the acidification of the alkali-soluble fraction to pH 3-6 to obtain a gel fraction and obtain an acidified solution containing the additional carbohydrate fraction and (d) the separation of the gel fraction from the solution containing the additional carbohydrate fraction.
