PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program for improving the contrast of a shaded part within an image and a method for correcting the brightness of the shaded part. PSOLUTION: The area of a shaded part within an image is detected by a shaded part area detecting part 100. The real histogram of a plurality of pixels in the area of the shaded area is detected by a shaded part histogram detecting part 300. Based on the real histogram detected, a desired histogram generating part 400 determines a target histogram for achieving improved contrast about the shaded part. More specifically, the central area of the real histogram is enlarged into a maximum brightness range and the bottom and top areas of the real histogram are converted into histograms with generally uniform frequencies, which are then synthesized with the enlarged histogram to generate the desired histogram. A brightness converting part 500 converts the brightness of the plurality of pixels in the shaded part to achieve the desired histogram, which is then synthesized with an image of an unshaded part to generate an image where the contrast of the shaded part has been improved.
