PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anode electrode material which can realize a nonaqueous electrolyte battery excellent in a discharge capacity and a charge/discharge cycle life. PSOLUTION: The anode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte battery is composed of an intermetallic compound as main phase having a composition as shown in the following general formula and R, M, Si as indispensable elements. The general formula: RMSBx/SBSiSBy/SBTSBz/SBZSB/SBXSB/SB, wherein R is for at least one kind selected from rare earth elements including Y, M for at least one kind selected from Fe, Co, Mn, Cu, Cr and Ni, T for at least one kind selected from V, Nb, Ta, Mo and W, Z for at least one kind selected from a group of elements selected from Sn, Al, Sb and In, and X for one kind selected from B, C, N and P, and wherein 0.8x1.1, 2.7y3.2, 0z0.5, 0.8x+z1.2, 00.5, 2.7+y3.3 and 01 (in atomic percentage).
