PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for calculating a color gamut that approximates a polygon aggregate as a polygon in a device independent color space to simply approximate a color gamut of an object device with high precision. SOLUTION: An apex generating section 2 of a base polygon aggregate buildup section 1 calculates coordinates of a set of the apexes of the object device in a device color space covering the color gamut reproduced y the object device in a device color space without excess and deficiency, and a polygon generating section 3 generates a base polygon aggregate from the apex coordinates. The color gamut of the object device forms a rectangular solid in general in the device color space, then the generating section 3 simply obtain the polygon aggregate. Then a polygon apex mapping section 4 respectively maps the coordinates of the apexes of each polygon to coordinates in the device independent color space to updates the coordinates. Thus, the device can obtain the polygon aggregate in the device independent color space. The polygon aggregate can approximate the polygon denoting the color gamut in the device independent color space.
