PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which is superior in handness in use at reading a double-sided manuscript and a manuscript feeder. PSOLUTION: This image reader is equipped with a manuscript tray 11 which feeds a manuscript from a bundle of manuscripts; a first transport path which carries the manuscript fed from the manuscript tray 11; a scanner device 70 which reads the image of one side of the manuscript from the other side of the carried manuscript; and a CIS 50 which reads the image of the one side of the manuscript from the other side opposed to the one side via the transfer path. This is provided with a mode of reading both sides using the scanner device 70 and the CIS 50 at the same time when performing both-side reading of the manuscript, and a mode of performing both-side reading of the manuscript with only the scanner device 70 by making the manuscript inverted using a third transfer path 33, a forth transfer path 34, and a fifth transfer path 35 without using the CIS 50.
