PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent wear resistance at high-speed gear cutting on the surface of a solid gear cutting tool made of a supper hard alloy.;SOLUTION: The tool is set on a rotary table rotating and revolving in arc ion plating equipment and an atmosphere in the equipment is formed into a gaseous nitrogen atmosphere, and an arc discharge is generated between the following (a) and (b); (a) an Al-Ti alloy cathode electrode and a Ti-Al alloy cathode electrode which are disposed in a manner to be opposed to each other with the rotary table; and (b) anode electrodes which are provided to the cathode electrodes. In this way, the hard coating layer in which a point of the highest Al content and a point of the lowest Al content are present at prescribed spaces alternately and repeatedly is physical-vapor-deposited on the surface of the tool along the thickness direction to 1 to 15 m overall average layer thickness.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
