PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a manganese oxide having very excellent grain size distribution by specifying the ratio of the calcium and/or magnesium content to the number of mols of manganese in manganese oxide, in the production process of this manganese oxide. SOLUTION: In this manganese oxide, the ratio of the Ca and/or Mg content to the number of mols of manganese is adjusted to 0.01-2.50 mol%. As the manganese oxide, that having a 1-100 m2/g BET specific surface area and a grain size distribution of =0.4, is preferred. This production process of the manganese oxide comprises: adding a Ca salt and/or an Mg salt to an Mn salt aqueous solution, in an amount sufficient to provide a 0.01-2.50 mol% ratio of the Ca and/or Mg content to the number of mols of manganese; adding an alkali solution to the resulting Mn salt aqueous solution in an equivalent-ratio of the alkali to the total of Ca and/or Mg of 0.1-10 to obtain a suspension of Mn(II) hydroxide; passing an oxygen-containing gas through the suspension while heating and maintaining the suspension to and at 20-100 deg.C, to oxidize the Mn ion and to form a precipitate; and then, filtering and separating the precipitate, washing the filtered and separated precipitate with water and drying the washed precipitate.
