Assemblies incorporating cells, biologically active molecules, or combinations thereof. Three dimensional tissue scaffolds are used in the assemblies. The three dimensional tissue scaffolds include a plurality of scaffold layers seeded with cells, biologically active molecules, or combinations thereof, the plurality of cell scaffold layers stacked one on top of another and bonded together in the absence of a solvent or an adhesive. Methods of making the assemblies are also disclosed.
