In the present invention, there is provided a cell expression system for an in vivo or ex vivo secreted protein, particularly interferon. The invention further provides pharmaceutical compositions for modifying cells of a mammalian recipient with DNA encoding the secreted protein in situ. The pharmaceutical compositions according to the present invention are useful for the localized and systemic delivery of interferons in situ when treating cancer.
