The method involves using an out-band trigger by a network for initiating internet protocol (IP) connection establishment. A mobile terminal responds to the out-band trigger by using an in-band trigger for establishing the IP connection. The IP connection is maintained for a predetermined time after the latest transaction. The mobile terminal enters a periodic polling mode and periodically inquires the network for data items to be synchronized. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) mobile terminal for a mobile network; and (2) network element connectable to mobile network.
