A polysaccharide hydrogel extracted from a natural source, which can be used as release retarding agent in matrix spheroids, is disclosed. The polysaccharide hydrogel allows controlled release of the therapeutic agent incorporated into the spheroid particles. The polysaccharide hydrogel can control the release of therapeutic agent for a prolonged time period, and can enhance the bioavailability of the incorporated therapeutic agent and reduces its dose, which, in turn, reduces the dose-related side-effects of the therapeutic agent.
