Apparatus for mitigating distortion effects in determination of signal usability comprises a signal receiver that receives a signal representing a stream of information symbols and produces a symbol stream. Each information symbol having a desired component and an undesired component, a desired component determiner coupled to the signal receiver which estimates the desired component of a first information symbol and produces a desired component estimate, an undesired component determiner coupled to the desired component determiner and the signal receiver that estimates undesired component of the first information symbol based on the undesired component estimate, a sealer coupled to the desired component determiner and the undesired component determiner, that scales the undesired component estimate and produces a scaled undesired component estimate, the scaling factor represents a result of a ratio of a reference value to magnitude of the desired component estimate, a signal usability determiner coupled to the sealer determines and indicia of symbol stream usability.
