A process for operating a steam power plant (1) having a coal-fired steam generator (2),in which at least two partial air streams (23, 24) are heated by means of the exchange of heat in at least one exhaust gas/air heat exchanger (7, 25) with hot exhaust gases (21) that are obtained in the steam generator (2) by the combustion of coal (26) the coal is dried in a milling-drying system (3) with a first partial air stream of the heated air supplied as a primary air stream (23) and a second partial air stream of the heated air is supplied to the steam generator as a secondary air stream (24) for the combustion of the coal (26), and in which in an air/air heat exchanger (8) the secondary air stream (24) is preheated upstream from the exhaust gas/air heat exchanger (7, 25) with respect to the direction in which the secondary air stream (24) flows by the exchange of heat with the heated primary air stream (23), and the steam power plant to perform the process.
