A method for enhancing levels of Polyunsaturated fatty acids in thraustochytrid protist by inoculating the protist into a culture medium, growing the protist for 2 to 5 days at a tempeature ranging from 25 to 30°C to obtain cells, harvesting the cells by centrifugation to obtain biomass, storing the biomass at about 10°C for time duration ranging between 12 to 48 hours and obtaining increased polyunsaturated fatty acid from the stored biomass by conventional extraction methods.
