A method for sequestering a fluid, which method comprises in-situ heat treating a hydrocarbon containing formation, and sequestering the fluid within the heat treated formation; characterized in that the in-situ heat treatment involves pyrolysing hydrocarbons present in the formation by means of a plurality of heat sources such that superposition of heat produced from the heat sources occurs, that said in-situ heat treated hydrocarbon containing formation has at least a portion with a permeability of at least 100 millidarcy and that sequestered fluid is adsorbed onto hydrocarbon containing formation.
