A method for producing direct reduced iron with reduced consumption and emission of carbon monoxide, wherein, feed comprising iron oxide material and carbonaceous material having one or more of coal, coke, petroleum coke and char is provided into an oxidizing zone of a furnace, first oxidant and first fuel containing methane, natural gas, oil or coal are provided into the oxidizing zone through a plurality of oxidizing burners, and combusting first oxidant and first fuel in the oxidizing zone to heat the feed, characterized in that said first oxidant is a fluid having an oxygen concentration greater than or equal to 25 mole percent, heated feed is passed from the oxidizing zone into a reducing zone of the furnace; second oxidant and second fuel containing methane, natural gas, oil or coal are provided into the reducing zone through a plurality of burners, said second oxidant being a fluid having an oxygen concentration greater than or equal to 25 mole percent, second oxidant and second fuel are combusted in the reducing zone to produce carbon monoxide; iron oxide material is reacted in the reducing zone with carbonaceous material having one or more of coal, coke, petroleum coke and char and with carbon monoxide to reduce the iron oxide material and produce direct reduced iron; and direct reduced iron is recovered from the furnace.
