The invention disclosed in this application relates to a mucoadhesive buccal composition useful for smoking cessation, which comprises hydrophilic polymers, nicotine, starch and excipients, the excipients having the property of controlling the release of nicotine, the resulting composition being provided with a backing membrane to facilitate unidirectional release of nicotine. This invention also relates to a process for the preparation of the said composition.
