The present invention refers to a method for transforming non-embryogenic maize callus, such as those obtained from mature seeds or any other plant meristem, into embryogenic callus by the culture thereof in the presence of any mitogen, particularly insulin or any IGF. The cell mass, the protein content, mainly cyclin D1 and ribosome protein, the DNA synthesis an the mitotic index of the embryogenic callus treated by the present method are substantially increased, the arrangement of the cell population thereof being modified in case of being more elongated cells non suitable for the proliferation thereof than small cells suitable for the proliferation thereof. The non-embryogenic callus, therefore, is transformed into an embryogenic callus suitable for the cell growth and proliferation, as well as the somatic spread and the transformation thereof by methods well known by experts.
