Bales of hay after recovery from the fields are further compressed and cut into portions more manageable for use with domestic pets after being encompassed by a winding sheet. Separate portions are positioned against the winding sheet so that when later they need to be removed only the winding sheet has to be cut. Several portions of hay can be pressed at the same time. The foil winding sheet is of plastic, against which the hay fibers expand in a sprung fashion. After compression into a bale form, the material is provided with cutting surfaces at right-angles to the length direction of the bale and the fibers are pressed together parallel to the cutting surfaces.
