The luggage items are placed on top of supports (4) arranged in layers one above the other in a cassette (1). This cassette is then transported to or from the aircraft using a transport cart and unloaded one layer at a time onto a luggage transport device such as a belt. An independent claim is also included for the following: (1) Cassette used for this method, comprising supports arranged in layers one above the other, closure parts (5) located one above the other at the same height as the supports at one end of the cassette, and a mechanism for swinging the closure parts open and closed; and (2) Loading device for the cassettes, comprising a feed for the baggage, a means for moving the luggage from the feed into the cassette, and a means for moving the feed and cassette relative to each other in the height direction.
