The deep fryer (1) has a deep frying pan (4) with a heated frying medium such as oil and fat, for frying food (9) carried by a basket (5) fitting into the pan. A drive unit sets the basket into a reciprocal movement or vibration such that the heated frying medium drains from the food. The drive unit is incorporated in a handle (6) coupled to the basket. The drive unit is switched off automatically after a preselected time or after a preselected number of vibrations.
