Disclosed is a therapeutic composition comprising an effective amount of a compound of formula (1) or a pharmaceutically acceptable ester or salt thereof, wherein the substituents are as defined in the specification. The disclosed compounds are delta opioid receptor agonists that mediate the cardioprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning.
