An ex vivo or in vitro method for the restoration of degenerate, damaged or injured cartilage function, wherein said method comprises the step of: (a) subjecting a degenerated, damaged or injured cartilage or a cartilage graft removed from a joint, or chondrocytes, ex vivo or in vitro, at an intermittently applied hydrostatic pressure (IHP) of between about 0.5 and about 30 MPa for about 1 to about 8 hours a day; (b) withdraw the IHP during a recovery period of approximately 16 to 22 hours; and (c) repeat steps (a) and (b) for a period of approximately 4 to approximately 100 days or as many as necessary.
