A method for determining the increased risk of a subject of susceptibility to developing asthma in the subject, whose method comprises the steps of: a) providing a sample of nucleic acid obtained from blood or saliva, or a sample from skin or hair of the subject; and b) detecting in said sample at least the allele 2 of IL-1B (-511) containing a T in the base -511 of the IL-1B or the allele 2 of IL-1B (+3954) containing a T in the +3954 base of IL-1B, where the detection of said allele indicates that the patient has an increased risk of susceptibility to develop asthma.
