The invention involves a method for treating a human survivor of a heartattack and provides further improvement insur-vival following the heart attack by the early initiation and long-termadministration of a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor,pref-erably, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor.The inhibitor may beused on its own, or in conjuction with other therapeuticcompounds such as .beta. blockers and thrombolytic agents. The preferredinhibitor is captopril.
