MOVABLE BARRIER OPERATOR HAVING FORCE AND POSITION LEARNING CAPABILITY

A movable barrier operator (10) includes a wall control switch module (39)having a leam switch (39b) thereon. The switch module(39) is connectable to a control unit (70) positioned in a head (12) of agarage movable barrier operator. The head unit (12) also containsan electric motor (106) which is connected to a transmission for opening andclosing a movable barrier (24) such as a garage door. Theswitch module (39) includes a plurality of switches coupled to capacitorswhich, when closed, have varying charge and discharge timesto enable which switch has been closed. The control unit (70) includes anautomatic force incrementing system for adjusting the maximalopening and closing force to be placed upon the movable barrier (24) during alearn operation. Likewise, end of travel limits can also beset during a leam operation upon installation of the unit (10). The movablebarrier unit (10) also includes an ambient temperature sensor(120) which is used to derive a motor temperature signal, which motortemperature signal is measured and is used to inhibit motor operationwhen further operation exceeds or is about to exceed set point temperaturelimits.
