The amount of an undesired diarylalkane by-product formed in an alkylationreactionusing a zeolite beta catalyst in which a feed aromatic reacts with an olefinis reduced byusing an alkylaromatic diluent in an amount such that the ratio of phenylgroup per alkylgroup corresponding to the olefin reactant entering the reactor is held in therange 0.75:1 to25:1 and the concentration of the olefin entering the reaction is less than anamountcalculated by dividing MW O by the sum of 6.17 MW A and MW O where MW O =molecularweight of the olefin and MW AA = molecular weight of the feed aromatic.
