A heterologous protein is produced by: (i) culturing a microorganismtransformed with anexpression vector comprising a gene encoding a modified E. coli enterotoxin IIsignal peptide fusedwith the heterologous protein to produce and secrete the heterologous proteinto periplasm, saidmodified E. coli enterotoxin II signal peptide being obtained by replacing atleast one of the 2nd,4th, 5th, 12th, 20th and 22nd amino acids of E. coli enterotoxin II signalpeptide of the followingamino acid sequence (SEQ ID NO: 1) with another amino acid, with the provisothat at least one ofthe 2nd and 4th amino acid of the modified peptide is lysine; and (ii)recovering the heterologousprotein from the periplasm.
