The invention provides a resin composition comprising (A) a polymer comprisingat least one primary carbamatefunctional group and one or more 10 quaternary ammonium groups, and (B) acarbamate functional reactive additive that is generatedin situ during the production of polymer (A). The invention also provides amethod of making a electrocoat resin compositioncomprising (A) a polymer having at least one primary carbonate group and oneor more quaternary ammoniwn groups and (B) acarbamate functional 15 reactive additive, the method comprising reacting amonomeric polyisocyanate, and a compound comprisingat least one group that is reactive with isocyanate and at least one carbamategroup, so as to produce both (1) an intermediate producthaving at least one carbamate functional group and at least one isocyanatefunctional group, as well as (2) a carbamate functionalreactive additive having no isocyanate 20 functionality, reacting saidintermediate product with a compound having at least one epoxygroup and at least one isocyanate reactive group, said reaction occuring inthe presence of the reactive additive so as to produce acarbamate functional resin having at least one epoxy group, reacting said atleast one epoxy group with a tertiary amine compoundin the presence of an acid to provide a carbamate functional resin having 25one or more quaternary ammonium groups, said reactionoccurring in the presence of the reactive additive to provide a resincomposition comprising (A) a carbamate functional resin havingone or more quaternary ammonium groups and (B) a carbamate functional reactiveadditive. Finally, the invention provides electrocoatcoating compositions comprising 30 the resin composition of the invention anda method of using said electrocoat coatingcompositions.
