The invention relates to a method and an encoding device for encoding an image area of an image, a first encoded data flow having a standard quality being produced in a first quality level for said image area, and a second encoded data flow having a quality that is improved together with the first encoded data flow in relation to the standard quality being produced. A first intermediate information representing the image area in the first quality level and a second intermediate information representing an estimated image area of the image area in at least one image that temporally precedes or temporally succeeds the image or the already reconstructed image of the second quality level is provided. A weighted first and second intermediate information is produced by weighting the first and second intermediate information with at least one respective associated first and second weighting factor, the at least first weighting factor being produced by a definable weighting function depending on at least one of the second weighting factors. A third intermediate information is generated by subtracting the weighted intermediate information from an image information that represents the image area of the second quality level to be encoded and the second encoded data flow is produced based on the third intermediate information. The invention also relates to a method and a decoding device for decoding the first and second encoded data flow.
